Greetings,
I am new to GitaneUSA. I bought this 1971 (or 1972) Gitane Tour de France Professional frame recently on ebay. It was quite faded but a little polish, testor's red metallic and some carnuba wax seemed to bring it back. From what I can tell it is original paint and decals. This sight has been great to learn from while I built it up. I suppose it's sacrilege to put on modern wheels, stem, and crank but my trusty Kestrel 4000 from 1987 finally developed a crack in the carbon so I just moved the components over. The bike measures close to 57cm on the TT and ST and rides suprisingly fast. Climbs as good or better than the Kestrel. Shifting is fast with Suntour downtube 7 sp indexing. From 71 to 75 I lived in Spain, and had a Spanish Torrot that I bought for $100 new. It was reliable but quite heavy. My buddies had Zeus, Gitane and Falcon that were feather weight for the day and cost $200 new. A few years back I restored a 1984 Zeus Supercronos, now I have the Gitane, and I am keeping an eye out for a 70's Falcon San Remo. All for now and I will be enjoying this website.
