This one has the brake on the front of the fork like the eBay bike.

Le Blaireau hammering. The brake is on the rear of the fork crown.

Sprinting at the finish, 1981 TT bike.

I'd like to see the provenance indicating that it was a bike that Hinault rode... Rolling Eyes

I am with Chas.: I'd need evidence. But it does appear to be about the right size.

It could have been a spare team bike or one that was made for another rider on the team....

Could be, but when I compare your first pic and the Ebay photo's I start to belief it IS the bike he's leaning on...

Provenance

"Provenance (from the French provenir, "to come from"), is the chronology of the ownership, custody or location of a historical object. The term was originally mostly used in relation to works of art, but is now used in similar senses in a wide range of fields, including archaeology, paleontology, archives, manuscripts, printed books, and science and computing.

The primary purpose of tracing the provenance of an object or entity is normally to provide contextual and circumstantial evidence for its original production or discovery, by establishing, as far as practicable, its later history, especially the sequences of its formal ownership, custody, and places of storage. The practice has a particular value in helping authenticate objects. Comparative techniques, expert opinions, and the results of scientific tests may also be used to these ends, but establishing provenance is essentially a matter of documentation."

Taking a seller's word, opinion or unauthenticated claim about the provenance of an article listed on eBay is a leap of blind faith... Rolling Eyes

The bike is spectacular but....

There were 18 members of the 1982 Renault-Elf-Gitane Team. A number of those riders could have ridden a bike that size.

Also, a champion like Hinault (Lemond and Fignon too), usually had spare bikes as back ups in case something happened in a race or during transport.

Those bikes were rare but some were sold to the public.

Hello all,

as an active member I'm new to the forum, but I was reading and learning much here about Gitane cycles in the past. My wife and I own some old Gitane race bikes, she has a 1977 Super Olympic and I ride a 1978 Gitane with an Alan frame, there is also a ca. 1983 Trophee with Dura Ace 7200 EX in restoration... I just couldn't resist and bought this Gitane Profil on Ebay, the bike is just in transit to me. For me it's not so important if Monsieur Hinault used this bike, I was fascinated about the condition and the overall appearance. I have nonetheless any questions, perhaps you can help me: In the interview with Bernard Hinault on this website he states frame dimensions of 54 cm in height and 56.5 cm in length with an angle of 19 at the rear instead of 17, would this be a hint if the bike on Ebay has the same geometry? I find also that there are Gitane Profil with and without this mount for the number plate, the Profil on the internet without the mount seems all equipped with Dura Ace? Anyway, I couldn't resist...

Best regards

Michael

Catalog specs call for the dura ace. The team itself probably would have used campy except for the hubs which are mavic because of the 80mm front hub. Theres two types of number pegs ive seen, the regular one or the one on your bike . Also ive never seen a number peg on a profil unless it was a team bike.
