Doesn't look like one to me - but I cannot even tell what color it is (silver or white?). I have never seen anything like that before. What year is it supposed to be? 1990's?

Hi Stephan,
Well, it is great to be invided to be a part of this fine Gitane resource!
This particular Gitane appears to be, virtually, identical to my 1990 Gitane 653. In 1989, Gitane introduced, three upper echelon road models; two Reynolds 653 models; the Replica Two with Campag. Croce d' Aune and the Exploit with Campag. Athena. The third model was a Reynolds 531 model equipped with Shimano 105, the Leader.

However, in 1990, Gitane of America provided road frames only; ie the 653 and 531. Choosing a 653, I equipped this model, essentially, as a Replica Two. Noting some photos of Toshiba riders Andreas Kappes and Remig Stumpf on the European circuit in 1990, these bikes appear to be identical to said referenced Replica Two.

Best,
Peter H.

Nice looking bike. It would be good to get some clearer / larger shots. The serial number on the bottom bracket might give us clues, perhaps including the rider's initials.

Below is a great resource and good for a quick check on teams past and present. This link focuses on teams in 1990 (for other teams select the drop down menu in the top right corner of the page, when on the link).

When on the page, just select your team and then drill down to specific riders.

I don't think La Vie Claire / Toshiba ever rode Gitane....

I would love to see some pictures of 1990 Gitane bicycles. I thought that Gitane in the USA wasn't around at that time, but I could be wrong....

Post some pictures of the 653 models!!!

Thanks Lofter, Sandman, Gtane!
A bit more on the 1989-1990 road frames and the 1991 program. Unfortunately, I only received a spec sheet from Torsten at Gitane of America listing said 1989-1990 frames and 1991 velos. The 653 (Reynolds 753 main tubes, 531 forks and stays) and 531 (531C) bikes in Team White, came equipped with Cinelli lugs and Campagnolo dropouts.

To the best of my knowledge, Team La Vie Claire never rode Gitane velos, and I have no direct information that Toshiba did, but Bicycle Guide's 1989 Buyers' Annual stated that the latter velos were "identical frames, Gitane assures us, that are supplied to its' pro riders". No team was specified, but pictures from from the February 11, 1991 edition of the respected U.S. publication Velo News indicate Toshiba Team riders Remig Stumpf and Andreas Kappes on team white Gitanes. My impression is that this team raced in 1988-89, thus would not show up on a 1990 team roster.

These were not the last Gitanes imported into the U.S. For 1991, Gitane switched back to Columbus for its' road program for the U.S. Two premium velos were available; a Campagnolo EL/Campag C Record (virtually the RMO team velo) plus a Columbus SLX model (frame only).

This completes a picture, in that most of Gitane's finest bikes were available in the U.S. until 1991-92 when Gitane withdrew from the U.S. market.
Best Regards,
Peter H.

yeah baby. toshiba on delta's. Not sure how long they rode gitanes though. Perhaps only the one year? When did toshiba fold?

Hang on....... did toshiba become the chazel team? pink & yellow jersey with a teddy bear on it? JF Bernard rode for that team too, before he ended up at Banesto. So perhaps Jeff did ride a gitane?

Wisey, Sandman,
Yes, I believe that it was just for the one year. Toshiba rode another fine French velo the following year. I am not sure as to how long Toshiba remained in the peleton.

I believe that the next team to ride Gitane (Gitane/Vitus) was the Belgian Histor-Sigma squad.
Best,
Pete H.
