Grumpy,
A fine example lacking warts in my opinion. Do you have a plan of attack?

Sort of. replace the bars and stem and seat for starters. Then strip off the brakes, cranks, etc. Get rid of that ridiculous pie pan spoke protector. Clean, polish and buff everything. I don't know much about paint touch up...I bought some Testors paints and might try my hand on an area that's not too visible...was thinking to do that and then use compound to rub it in. I have to do some research on that. I will probably panto the big chainwheel just for s**ts and grins (I'm a toolmaker, so doing that kind of thing is relatively easy for me). Ultimately, I'll work on the details...bar tape and maybe change the cables to be yellow....find the appropriate water bottle.
If I decide to actually ride it, I'll change the rims and put sew ups on it.
Any suggestions?

The spoke protector (I agree) needs to go. The other stuff looks good though...but then, I just want people to be happy with their Gitanes. Collecting bikes doesn't need to make sense: It needs to make you happy! |

Grumpy, the bike is in stunning condition. Well done indeed on the purchase.
I really like shot number 3 of the forks.
The components are in such superb condition and the bike looks like it's hardly been ridden.
It will look amazing once you've completed the changes you suggest. There seems so little to do. Apart from the obvious mechanical checks I'd say you've covered it.
Do post shots of the machine once you've finalised it.
