This is from a SPRINT International magazine from October 1983 issue covering the Paris 'Salon du Cycle'. I'm sure Nicolas could provide an exact translation.
There is mention of Gitane and Trek's intended collaboration which resulted in Gitane's introduction of BMX and Mountain bikes as part of their 1984 lineup and presumably Trek's acquisition of the Gitane brand here in the US. It seems the original intent was to have Gitane acquire the Trek brand in Europe instead but due to a very strong USD vs. FF it made more sense the other way around.
Confirmation and/or corrections on this may be in order - read for yourselves!
...and yes, I'm snowed-in and have nothing better to do. I probably should have worked on my Hinault site instead!
