Firstly, hi everyone! I've been having a lot of fun the last few hours, reading through the forums here and looking at your photos of some beautiful bikes.
I bought a bike at the weekend (my first road bike, I'm hooked already, having so much fun) and, after a few days research, I think it is a Gitane. I can't see any markings on the frame without removing the components, it may well be that there are some under the AWFUL paint job that a previous owner had done to it. There is however a 5179 date code on the Huret derailleur so I'm guessing it is likely to be a 1980 model?
I was hoping someone would be able to give me an idea of what it is, and which of the components are likely to be original and which have been changed over the years. I'm guessing it's no classic or anything but I'd still love to bring it up to a nice standard, but I don't entirely know what I'm aiming for yet as I don;t know exactly what it is!
