Advice on headset replacement

Hi,
The headset on my 1982 Gitane 'Giro d'Italia' (Super Vitus 971) is a Campagnolo 1040/A which I think was available in English, French and Italian thread. It has become pitted meaning I need to replace it. Local Bike shop suggests I could source a standard 1" headset but I wonder whether I need to get one which is French threaded (like the the Bottom Bracket I replaced last year).
Any advice much appreciated

Most likely need french threaded. You can probably look on the cups themselves...they should tell you. Otherwise, measure the threads.

The Giro d'Italia appears to be a model made for the UK. There's no catalog on the website showing this model.

I found this listing on a UK website.

http://www.vintagevelo.co.uk/2013/10/14/gitane-vitus-giro-ditalia/

It has a Campagnolo Gran Sport gruppo with Mafac side pull brakes.

The headset was model 1040/A. The same or similar headset was also used in the Nuovo Gran Sport and Victory gruppos.

Look at the underside of the top lock nut and the top of threaded upper cup on the headset. The size should be stamped into one or both parts. You'll have to remove the stem first.

The stack height on these headsets was ~34mm.

Here's how to measure the stack height.

A replacement Campy headset will probably be hard to find and expensive.

There's an easy way around this. The Tange CDS Levine headsets look just about the same as the Campy 1040/A headsets. They're better quality and have a plastic dust seal on the bottom cup. The stack height is ~33+mm.

They were/are available with metric French threads but are very rare.

What I've done is to replace the Campy crown race and lower bearing cup with the Tange parts ("B" section shown above). Those are the damaged parts on your bike.

Tange CDS Levine headsets sell for $20-$30 USD and they're always listed on US eBay. Get one with a 26.4mm crown race.

Looks like a nice bike.
