The 1983 Team Pro model was sold as a complete bike and a bare frame.

The bikes sold in the US were imported and sold by Cycles de France, Inc which was a joint venture between the bike manufacture Trek and S.A. Micmo/Gitane in France.

The 1983 Team Pro wasn't listed in the US catalog.

During that period Gitane top model bikes were equipped with mostly French Spidel components except for Modolo brakes and Selle Italia saddles.

The actual bikes used by the 1983 Gitane Team were Spidel/Modolo equipped or Campagnolo equipped. There were also some bikes equipped with Mavic components.

I put together this Flickr album showing how to determine stack height on a frame. Read the text under the pictures:

Stronglight A9 headsets have ~39mm stack height. Campagnolo Nuovo Record and super Record headsets are ~41mm.

Stronglight is making a new style A9 headset with sealed roller bearings instead of needle bearings like on the original model.

They're also making an inexpensive steel version which has loose bearings rather than sealed cassette bearings.

Thanks for the reply..... Oh wise one.
I have an 84 team pro but would like to build it like Lemond's 83 world championship bike. The 84 had a stronglight A9 from what I read....so his probably had a D8 Stronglight Spidel??? "Extra Leger" ? I don't want to cut the fork to a smaller stack height if the 83 is smaller..... So if the 83 set up cuts it smaller, I would substitute it with the 84 stock headset so in the future an 84 bike could be built. Clear as mud?

Unless the steerer is DRASTICALLY long, you don't have to cut anything. 1" diameter spacers from 0.5mm to 3+mm are readily available.

Fignon on a 1983 Team bike. Notice the the Gitane decal is only on the front of the seat tube and it has a Simplex/Spidel braze on front derailleur.

This is supposed to be an actual NOS 1983 Team bike not a replica. Notice the 2mm spacer under the lock nut on the headset:

The 1984 Team Pro bikes had Gitane decals on both sides of the seat tubes and most of them had clamp on front derailleurs.

Greg Lemond's Campy equipped 1983 World Championship bike with Reynolds tubing and old style decals.

Hey thanks again for your input! I thought he rode on the yellow bordered graphics and yellow bar tape with black Modolo master pro brakes. This bike looks like an earlier bike.....

Are you asking about Fignon or Lemond?

They both rode Gitanes with the black and yellow "bubble" decals in 1983-84.

The poster shows Fignon in 1983.

in my knowledge some informations here are not correct

the picture of gregs bike shows not his 1983 bike that he used
for the world champion ship - maybe this bike is the one he used 1982,
at the 1983 world championship he used a typical 83 team pro team bike - decals and parts

the nos 83 team pro bike which is shown was as it was offered in ebay
not called a original team bike and it is not a team bike - its a "normal" 83 team pro produced in october 1983 - neverless a beautiful bike

the original 83 team bikes that i know where produced before the tdf, the first, early team bikes which were used in the early classic races where totally underchromed - the colour were falling of the frames after short time may for the giro definetly for the tdf the team gets new bikes or the bikes were new coloured, all
of the serial 83 team pros that i know where produced after the tdf

the frame number, part of the frame number is the production date

gregs bike

in my knowledge gregs bike which is on the picture could be the bike
that he used by winning the Coors Classic Colorado in 1981
this bike he didn t take back to europe and stored it at his parents

the shown bike is definetly not a 1983 bike and not the bike he used 1983

Good point about this possibly being Greg Lemond's Coor's Classic bike.

I haven't seem it in a number of years...

It's been on display at the legendary Cupertino Bike Shop in Cupertino California since the 1980's. The current owner Vance Sprock raced against Lemond when they were both Juniors.

He won the Mt. Tamalpias Hill Climb as a Junior in 1976, beating Greg LeMond and all the Senior 1-2 riders except George Mount and Dave Boll. Both Seniors were on the US Olympic Team that year. The race goes from sea level to 2,576 feet (785 m).

The story of the bike's history has been told so often that most people don't remember the REAL story!
