Stephan,

I never knew that Tommy Simpson rode for Gitane. He was on the 1962 Gitane - Leroux team.

Wisey is probably aware of the 3 Australian Gitane teams listed.

He actually wore the yellow jersey while riding for Gitane....I think the first Brit to do that.

Tommy Simpson was indeed the first Brit to wear the Yellow Jersey.

He did ride a Gitane for a while - below is one of his bikes. Forgive me if this link has come up before.

Hi guys, look what I found (on the right, next to the mysterious Hinault/Gitane bike):



Looks like the 1983 team from Switzerland registered on the site you found, verktyg...but it looks like they only got the 1982 batch.

I have seen that bike that Hinault is riding in some of my books. It says "Gitane" in small script on the head tube and seat tube. Very bizarre.

That is something that we need to find more about. Why did he have a silver bike for one or two of the classics? What was so special about that bike? Why silver? Why not stock Gitane decals???
